CPD Introduces New Training For Officers and Community

CPD's goal is to train civilians on how to react, respond and protect themselves in an active shooter situation. The department hosted the Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events, or CRASE, Train the Trainer Course.

This training is to certify law enforcement, including CPD and Illinois State Police, know how to direct community members and inform them on what should be done during an active shooter situation.

Superintendent Eddie Johnson says the goal is to train as many people as they can because these type of incidents don’t have a specific time, date or place.

This CRASE training event is also a way to honor fallen CPD Officer Samuel Jimenez who died at the Mercy Hospital shooting, along with the two other victims.

In relation to the Mercy Hospital shooting, Johnson says officers learned they have to be able to pass along knowledge of how to react.

He adds our country is suffering when it comes to active shooters. He says it's a trend we've seen across the country, where it's not a matter of if, but unfortunately a matter of when.
