Immigration Raids to Start Sunday

Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents are set to start deportation sweeps this Sunday.

As Chicago prepares for the raids community organizations have set up hotlines and workshops for undocumented families.

Alderman of the 35th ward, Carlos Ramirez-Rosa says most of the time ICE agents don't have a signed warrant when they arrive at your door.

He adds it's important for all of us to understand we have basic constitutional rights, regardless of where we were born or and our citizenship status.

That's the message community leaders want to hit home, ahead of the deportation sweeps set to start Sunday and end next Wednesday July 18th. Multiple reports say the raids are going to target at least 2,000 undocumented immigrants nationwide, who have pending deportation orders, or those who have failed to appear in court.

Mayor Lori Lightfoot says the Chicago Police Department will not work with Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents to detain any residents, but an executive order detailing that is still pending.

Activists and leaders say her signature on that executive order is the first step in trying to keep undocumented communities safe.

The biggest fear is the separation of families.

Chicago has hundreds of thousands of undocumented residents who live in mix status households.

A rally is set to happen Saturday at Daley Plaza starting at 11 a.m.
