Off-Duty Female Officer Was Found Dead of a Self-Inflicted Gunshot Wound

Chicago Police is investigating its second officer suicide in 2019. An off-duty female officer was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

When the shooting initially happened, police said there was a man in custody in connection to the officer's death. Hours later, CPD confirmed the incident was being investigated as a suicide.

CPD officials say 47-year-old Lori Rice, a Chicago Police sergeant, was found dead inside a vehicle of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Rice was a 21-year veteran of the department; she worked in the 12th district.

She was found around 9:30 Saturday evening on the 900 block of South Bell, near Taylor Street. A proper procession was held Sunday morning, as Rice's body was taken to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

Chicago Police Chief Communications Officer Anthony Gugliemi tweeted a statement saying, “Preliminary investigation reveals a possible self-inflicted gunshot wound. Detectives have classified this as a death investigation as we investigate the circumstances leading up to the shooting and await confirmation and additional information from the medical examiner."

If this death is officially ruled a suicide, this would be the officer second to take their life this year.
