Mayor Emanuel Wants Gas Tax Increase for Infrastructure Improvements

Drivers in Chicago and across the state of Illinois could soon see another tax increase on fueling at the pump.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s proposal is a 20 to 30 cent increase statewide on the already 19 cent state tax. Add that to the 10.5 percent sales tax and it gets pretty steep. The mayor says every 5 cents of the increase would bankroll $250 million in revenue statewide. $20 million of that would go to Chicago roads, bridges and rail improvements. Brandon Pope spoke with some drivers to gauge their feelings on the issue.
