Pride Action Tank coming together for LGBT seniors
The AIDS Foundation of Chicago and Pride Action Tank are taking actions to make change for LGBT seniors in Chicago.
About 76% of LGBT seniors are concerned about having adequate family or social supports to rely on as they age. As LGBT individuals age, their resources vary depending on where they live.
According to AARP research, compared to younger generations, LGBT seniors see almost a 50% decrease in resources if they live in a big city.
Their primary concerns are the availability of long-term care centers, limited access to service, verbal or physical harassment, and the action of having to hide or deny their identity. That's why the ‘OUTAging: Summit on Our Possibilities’ came to light, to make sure these themes are covered: the general lack of knowledge, strong support networks and the need to update existing systems and institutions in our state.
