Chicago Public Schools help victims of Hurricane Maria continue their education
Thousands of victims of Hurricane Maria have come to Chicago to seek refuge, and Chicago Public Schools (CPS) are helping students stay on track. According to the Chicago Tribune, over the past few weeks 140 students from Puerto Rico have enrolled in 73 CPS schools throughout the city.
CSP spokesperson Emily Bolton shared, "These children are entitled to immediate district enrollment, even if they lack access to health, immunization or school records, proof of residency or guardianship or other documentation normally required for district enrollment under non-emergency conditions….”
CPS has provided resources to identify student academic levels as well as enrolled students in programs to help get acclimated to the new environment.
