Van Dyke awaiting sentencing in Rock Island
Jason Van Dyke's lawyer visited him for the first time since his conviction at Rock Island County Jail.
Van Dyke's lawyer, Daniel Herbert says his client spends 23 hours a day in a cell at the Rock Island Jail and spends his time writing letters to his family and reading novels.
It has been almost two weeks since a jury found Jason Van Dyke guilty of second-degree murder and aggravated battery.
Van Dyke was taken to Rock Island on Monday, October 8, 2018. According to Herbert, “He looked ok. He is obviously still shaken up. He doesn't know what kind of sentence he's looking at.”
Van Dyke has had no interaction with other inmates at the jail because he is in protective custody. He was also in isolation for the three-night stay at Cook County.
The relocation doesn't necessarily mean Van Dyke won't come back to the city. He's expected to be back in court for a trial hearing on October 31st. He is expected to be sentenced later this year.
Due to Van Dyke's controversial case, he was sent to Rock Island for his safety and to keep order at Cook County.
