CPS nurse manager requests change in diabetic care
As the new school year gets into full swing, CPS nurses have been instructed to cut back on care for students with diabetes.
According to a Chicago Sun-Times report, nurses received an email stating they should cut back on services for diabetic students capable of monitoring their own sugar levels.
Nurses were also told to update those students' 504 plans as soon as possible. The 504 plan ensures that a child with special needs is accommodated, which is federal law.
Another email said students should not, “receive daily nursing minutes” on the next 504 plan and should receive nursing coverage over the phone or video conference.
Either way, federal law requires parents and providers to agree if a change in plans is going to take place.
CPS spokesman Michael Passman said one nurse manager wrote emails to four nurses regarding service modifications for four students. Passman says they did not approve the message and ordered a retraction.
He added no student service plans were formally or informally changed.
CPS officials will meet with a parent group called Raise Your Hand. If not treated or monitored, diabetes can be fatal.
