What does Juneteenth mean?

It's a combination of the words June and nineteenth, the day the Union Army informed the remaining slaves in Galveston, TX they were free on June 19, 1865.

What does Juneteenth celebrate?

Juneteenth is a holiday commemorating the freedom of slavery in the U.S. The day is also called Emancipation Day and Freedom Day.

Who celebrates this day?

The day is celebrated mostly by African-Americans. It is primarily celebrated in Texas where it has been an official state holiday since 1980. However, more people of all nationalities are becoming aware and celebrate the day. Recently, The City of Chicago, The State of Illinois, and the Federal Government passed bills that formally recognize Juneteenth as a holiday beginning in 2022.
