Historic Grammy wins for Chance the Rapper
Chicago's own Chance the Rapper took home three Grammys — including Best New Artist, Rap Album and Rap Performance for "No Problem" — at Sunday's 59th Grammy awards.
With his independently released Coloring Book, the South Side native beat Chicago-raised rapper Kanye West's The Life of Pablo. Coloring Book was released in May of 2016 and was the first streaming-exclusive album to make it to the Billboard 200.
Chance the Rapper is not necessarily new to the music industry, but he's new to the consideration of Grammy nominations. Last year, the Recording Academy changed their eligibilty rules to allow works released via streaming platforms to be nominated. Chance is the first artist to take home Best New Artist as an independent.
The 23 year old is a proud Chicagoan and calls out to his roots every chance he gets.
In his acceptance speech for Best New Artist, Chance said, "I want to thank God for my mother and my father, who supported me since I was young, for Kirsten, for Kensli, for all of Chicago, and I want to thank God for putting amazing people in my life."
Chance took to Twitter with another mention to Chicago upon his return and an illustration with his three golden gramophones.
